MY FIRST EMOTIONS

How should I use My First Emotions with a baby under 1 years old?
With My First Emotions you can read the stories, sing the songs, play the music and introduce the puppet to even the youngest of babies. This will help you get used to talking about emotions openly with your child. There is also a selection of activities that can be used with young babies – all the activities in the Activity Book show what age they can be used from. As time goes on, your baby will take a more active role in the other activities. We’ve provided a number of videos on the support website showing you some baby sign language, which you can use to help ask your preverbal child what they are feeling and to show that you understand their emotions and needs. And of course the parenting guidance is valid from Day 1 – the sooner you start using the techniques, the sooner it will become second nature.

Can I use My First Emotions for a child 3 years and over?
My First Emotions is designed for use with children from birth to the age of 3, however the set is adaptable and can easily be used with older children too. You can select activities that correspond to what your child enjoys and can do, and adapt those activities to your child.

In what way does My First Emotions help with mental health?
Children who are highly anxious, for example, and don’t know how to deal with this emotion, are more likely to avoid things that scare them – this avoidance keeps their anxiety going; it doesn’t reduce it. So, it is better for children to be able to label and talk about their negative emotions as a way to not let those emotions rule their lives. Developing emotional understanding from an early age equips children with practical coping tools to deal with emotional issues, shaping how children approach everyday life pressures as they grow into adults. Young children raised this way learn how to identify and manage their emotions, as well as developing an understanding of the feelings of others.

What support is offered for parents?
The full My First Emotions set comes with a comprehensive Parent’s Guide written by Dr John Lambie, Reader in Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. This essential guide explains how to recognise and deal with your child’s emotions, how to validate what your child is feeling, how to handle tantrums, and much more. You also receive access to a support website containing audio files for songs and music. And we are always happy to answer your questions!

How can My First Emotions be used in a nursery setting?
As a nursery teacher, My First Emotions will help you to equip children with the tools to understand and learn how to cope with emotions, and teach children how to control their own emotions. Robbie the Rabbit can be used in circle time to explore different feelings and you will find a range of fun activities in the Activity Book. You will also have access to 10 songs, which you can use to demonstrate different emotions through performing actions while singing along with the class. Please visit our teachers page for further information.

Is My First Emotions suitable for children with learning difficulties?
While My First Emotions will help children with learning difficulties, it has not been designed for this purpose. My First Emotions is for all children from birth to three years old. Having said that, it will certainly be beneficial to children who find it difficult to communicate how they feel, or children who are unable to express their emotions.

SKYLARK ENGLISH FOR BABIES

How can I teach my child three foreign languages?
Evidence and experience shows that languages can be introduced – through real-life communication and games – either simultaneously or successively. The second option works as follows: when the child has learned to play in two languages, you can start to teach them a third language, and then a fourth.

Does the Skylark English technique work with children who are older than 3 years?
The principles of the Skylark English technique can be used up to the age of 7 or 8 years. However, the stories, topics, words and activities were chosen specially for the 0-3 age range. Having said that, we know from our customers that the set can be quite interesting for 4 to 5-year-old children.

How can I teach my child English if my own pronunciation of sounds is not correct?
Everyone pronounces sounds a little (or very) differently. Almost everyone has an accent, regional features or individual ways of pronouncing particular sounds and words, and these features can be found in English and any other language. They can be heard when a person speaks their native language or a foreign language. The vast majority of children do not have speech disorders: they learn to speak gradually, in conversation with other people. Almost all children learn, in their own time, the sounds of a language just by listening to them and communicating with others. Skylark English has been designed to help children communicate in everyday situations.

Can a 2-year-old child study two foreign languages from scratch?
Yes, they can. Just don’t try to teach them as if they are in school or on a course; instead, use the words of the foreign languages in games, listen to stories and do other kinds of ‘accidental study’.
